Get a haircut – and then we will send your locks to Matter of Trust, a nonprofit group that uses hair to make mats and booms that can combat oil spills.

The mats soak up oil from the air, skin or water, according to the organization.

“You touch the oil with the hair and the hair just sucks it right up,” Matter of Trust President Lisa Gautier told the Florida Times-Union. “It looks sort of like a thick paper towel, about 1 foot by 1 foot, half an inch thick.”

Matter of Trust has been collecting human hair and pet fur to help combat oil spills for about two years now. Thousands of salons across the country donate hair clippings that are swept up off their floors, according to the Matter of Trust Web site.

“The hair donated from people all over the world is mailed to Matter of Trust,” explained blogger Gloria Campos-Hensley on InventorSpot.com. “Matter of Trust takes the fur and stuffs it into reused nylon or weaves it into mats, which are then used to clean up the oil.”

Alabama hairstylist Phil McCrory first discovered how efficiently hair absorbs oil spills when he saw that the fur on Alaskan otters was completely saturated with oil following the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill, according to Stylelist.com.

Experimenting with a method to see how much oil he could sop up, he invented a doormat that basically cleans up waters where the oil has spilled, according to Stylelist.com. After a few tries, he created an oil-absorbing hairmat.

The Matter of Trust Web site explains how to donate hair and fur clippings, and notes that thousands of pounds of hair and nylon are arriving from every state, plus Canada, Brazil, France and Great Britain. “Booms are being made all along the Gulf Coast near beaches and marshes,” the site notes. “What a community feeling!”

A massage is supposed to be a soothing, relaxing experience. So why do so many people arrive at 1:30 for a 1:30 massage? You should be in your robe already! And if you arrive late, in a frenzied state, you might as well have not come. Get there early is the most important tip for enjoying your massage. But there are plenty more. (Hint — don’t eat a big sausage sub right before you get there, and be sure to speak up if you don’t like the pressure.

Here are some tips adapted from the American Massage Therapy Association to help you enjoy your massage.

* Be receptive. Don’t eat just before a massage session.

* Be on time. If you arrive in a frenzied, rushed state, it will take longer to relax.

* If you don’t want to remove all your clothing, discuss it with the therapist. Wear what you will be comfortable in that will allow the therapist to work on the areas of your body that need it.

* Good communication is very important. Before the session, give accurate health information and let the massage therapist know what you want from the massage. During the massage session, Speak up if you have any feedback on the amount of pressure, speed of movement, room temperature, music volume, or lighting.

* Some people like to talk during a massage session, while others remain silent. In general you should do whatever you feel like, and the massage therapist will follow your lead.

* Breathing helps to facilitate relaxation. People often stop breathing when they feel anxious or a sensitive area is massaged. If you realize this is happening, remind yourself to breath.

* Try not to tighten up during the massage. Let your massage therapist know if this is happening. They may need to adjust the massage technique being used. They may also be able to help you relax the affected area.

* If you find your thoughts are racing during the massage, one way to be more “body-centered” and to quiet the mind is to follow the hands of the massage therapist and focus on how the touch feels.

* If anything happens during the massage that you dislike or seems improper, you have the right to ask the massage therapist to stop. If necessary, you also have the right to end the session.

* If you are dizzy or light headed after the massage, do not get off the table too fast.

* Drink extra water after a massage.

* Allow for some open, quiet time after your massage session if possible. Sometimes one needs a little time to integrate or absorb the results of the massage session or needs some “re-entry” time.

Remember, massage has its greatest benefits over time. The therapeutic effects of massage are cumulative, so the more often a person gets a massage, the better he or she will feel and the more quickly one’s body will respond. If you are getting massage to address chronic muscular tension or recovery from a soft tissue injury, more than one session is usually needed, so be prepared to schedule several sessions.

Summer may bring glorious visions of natural highlights and long windblown hair. The reality is that summer sun and humidity can damage your hair’s cuticle and result in dry, drab, split, brittle or frizzy hair and ends.

Sunlight can be just as damaging as a super hot blow dryer. Naturally curly hair is often a major victim to summer frizzies.

Consider some of these other tips for great summer hair care:

1. Prevent static electricity when you shampoo by applying a rinse out hair conditioner that instantly adds moisture and shine. If your hair is fine or thin, you may wish to skip the rinse out conditioning step and apply a “leave-in” conditioner instead.

2. After towel drying tresses apply a drop or two of a great leave-in product, ask our stylist for the product that hair needs, to the palms of your hands. Rub your hands together and then distribute the leave-in product throughout your strands.

3. Hair care products that advertise “replenishment” are designed to add moisture back to dry strands. Products advertising volume enhancing benefits are designed to add body.

Hair care products designed to add shine, may only add shimmer but not necessarily add moisture. Be sure to read all ingredients on the hair product labels to understand what benefits the product is designed to provide to your strands.

Consider these additional summer hair care tips:

If you normally use hot hair tools (blow dryers, hot irons, electric curlers) every day, try and give your hair a break during the summer months. Consider letting your air dry. Take a break from hot curling.

Hair braided when wet will air dry into beautiful waves.

For sun exposed or sun damaged tresses perform regular deep hair conditioning treatments utilizing our Sebastian and Davines fabulous hair repair products, After Sun Repair Mask.

For extra conditioning treatment apply a deep conditioner to damp or dry tresses, wrap in plastic wrap or a shower cap just before bedtime. Allow the deep conditioner to soak into damaged hair sections overnight for extra repair and re-moisturizing benefits.

When you find yourself out in the sun, at the beach or at the pool without pre-planning, reach for a hat to cover delicate strands. If a hat won’t do, great the next best thing which is the sunscreen.

Slather a regular SPF product on your tresses making sure to concentrate the product onto your scalp as well as your tresses. Although not a perfect solution, it will help save your tresses from major sun damage.

If you are wedded to your blow dryer, use a leave- in conditioner designed to protect your hair when blow drying.
When the summer heat is hottest contain potential frizzies by wearing your hair up in a knot, bun or braids.
Be careful using shine products to control frizzies. They often contain silicone and can coat your hair after just a few times. This will only make the problems worse in the long run.

We know a massage feels good, but it can have a host of therapeutic advantages, too.

The newest cure-all may be an ancient one: simple touch. The Chinese have been using massage for all kinds of medical conditions for centuries. Now, Western research is confirming that massage isn’t just for muscle pain. One of the most surprising findings: massage may help premature babies gain weight. When Tiffany Field, a professor of pediatrics, became a new mother, she massaged her premature infant daughter and was so impressed with the results she later founded the Touch Research Institute (TRI) at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Massage, it turns out, may boost immunity and help people with a range of conditions from premenstrual syndrome to high blood pressure. It also seems to help soothe pain from arthritis, burns and even surgery. Here are five surprising facts about massage from the research findings at TRI and elsewhere that you can put to use:

1. Pick Your Spot: You don’t have to massage the part of the body that hurts most. If you’re shy about letting a friend touch your aching lower back, for instance, she could help by massaging your shoulders instead. This is because massage creates chemical changes that reduce pain and stress throughout the body. One way it does this is by reducing a brain chemical called substance P that is related to pain. In a TRI study, for example, individuals with a form of muscle pain called fibromyalgia showed less substance P in their saliva (and they reported reduced pain) after a month of twice-weekly massages.

2. De-Stress, Stay Healthy. Massage may boost immunity. Several studies have measured the stress hormone called cortisol in subjects’ saliva before and after massage sessions, and found dramatic decreases. Cortisol, which is produced when you are stressed, kills cells important for immunity, so when massage reduces your stress levels and hence the cortisol in your body, it may help you avoid getting a cold or another illness while under stress.

3. Blood Pressure Benefits: Massage reduces hypertension, suggests a good deal of research. This may be because it stimulates pressure receptors that prompt action from the vagus nerve, one of the nerves that emerges from the brain. The vagus nerve regulates blood pressure, as well as other functions. In a 2005 study at the University of South Florida, hypertension patients who received 10 massages of 10 minutes each over three weeks showed significant improvements in blood pressure compared to a control group who simply rested in the same environment without any massage.

4. Technique Tactics: There’s little evidence to support one kind of massage over another, says Field, so don’t worry about whether your therapist is schooled in Shiatsu, Swedish or some other technique. The key is pressure firm enough to make a temporary indentation in the skin. If you try massage with a partner, use massage oil, which you can find in a health-food store or pharmacist, but test a little on your skin first to make sure you are not allergic.

5. Self Help. You can massage yourself. Although you don’t have to massage the part of the body that hurts to relieve pain, targeting that area does tend to help more. One example is massaging the arms. If you’re in danger of developing inflamed nerves in your hands or arms from repetitive movements (like typing on a keyboard, or even gripping a steering wheel for hours at a time) try massaging your arms for 15 minutes a day. Stroke from the wrist to the elbow and back down on both sides of the forehand.
